I grew up on a farm, so I know about cow tipping. Except I never actually did it. All of our crazy, whacked-out cows laid down to sleep.

Now… SCALE tipping is my specialty in marketing. You can tip the scales in your favor in business – with better marketing and advertising. But it’s not about which new, smokin’ hot advertising platform you choose. It’s about SAYING BETTER THINGS to people IN your marketing messages.

What if we were advertising sleeping pills for cows? (You know, so we could tip’em over when they fell asleep standing up – duh.)

Example 1:  ”Our cow sleeping pills are easy to swallow, highly-concentrated, and dissolve fast to ensure maximum effectiveness.”

Example 2:  ”Cow-tipping enthusiasts UNITE! Now, you can sprinkle a few yummy cow-sleeping pills throughout the herd, and within 20 minutes, you’ll be on your way to cow-tipping ecstasy!”

Do you see the difference in those advertising messages? It’s pretty obvious. Of course this is a silly example and there may be other factors involved that might change your ads a bit. But don’t try to get my attention by telling me about the product. I don’t care. Just tell me what the product (or service) is going to DO for me. How will it delight me? How will it take away some “pain” or frustration that I have? Then, if you need to add a few things into an ad to help take away doubt or reduce risk for the purchaser, that’s cool.

This is how you’ll start tipping the scales in your favor with better advertising and marketing. Say it better. Say something we care about. Something that grabs our attention and doesn’t put us to sleep. Remember – it’s all about your potential buyer – not about you.

Now, go tip some scales…not cows.

No cattle were injured in my make-believe-fantasy-world.

Have a groovy day!

About dc

Duane Christensen likes to organize words in a more effective manner to help you win the heart of your potential new customer. Those words can do many different things when arranged just right and used for Good... never Evil. ;-) Yes, we're talking about advertising. More specifically, small business advertising. I don't like it when hard-working local businesses getting duped into buying some kind of "ad package" that has little chance of paying them any dividends. I've dedicated almost 10 years to learning how to help small businesses get more from their local advertising. And I admit - I'm a geek. I love this stuff.
